Dragon user training

Training will help you to set up and use Dragon to best advantage.
Picture

Why use Dragon?
  • enhance your productivity — most people can dictate faster than they can type;
  • you might prefer, or find it easier to talk rather than type;
  • operate a computer more effectively if you have a health condition or disability that limits your ability to use the keyboard and mouse;
  • Dragon can make writing easier for those with dyslexia.
Face-to-face training
Viva Voce is based in Canberra, however we regularly travel to provide face-to-face training in the following locations:
  • NSW:  South Coast
  • Queensland: Sunshine Coast
  • Tasmania: Hobart
See the Dragon Training in Regional Australia page for details of scheduled visits.

Rate

The rate for 2020 is $160 per hour for training and $60 per hour for travel from base in Belconnen, ACT.
Prices do not include GST, as Viva Voce is no longer participating in GST.
A 5% Pay On Time Discount applies to invoices paid within 30 days, reducing the training rate to $152.00 per hour, and the travel rate to $57.00.
Payment can be made by EFT or credit card.

Remote training

Remote training is also available (using Team Viewer remote-in software) and will be useful for those who are not able to access face-to-face training whether because of their location, or to reduce the risk of infection during the Covid-19 crisis.
Remote training can also be used for troubleshooting and for shorter follow-up sessions, after initial face-to-face training.
Rate
The regular rate for remote training is as above, but without the travel cost.

How much training will I need?

If unsure of how much training you will need, we suggest starting with an initial session after which you can reassess.
The amount of training required to use Dragon to best advantage varies from person to person, depending on your needs.
Training will be tailored to suit your particular needs, so your program will depend upon a number of factors:
  • your existing knowledge and skills;
  • whether you are using the Premium or Professional edition of Dragon;
  • which applications you plan to use Dragon in;
  • do you wish to use Dragon just for dictating text?  Or do you need to do as many computing tasks as possible by voice?;
  • whether you need to customise Dragon by writing custom commands (macros); and
  • how much time you have for self-directed learning and practice.
Training will be most effective if delivered over several sessions and spaced several weeks apart to give you time to practise and consolidate between sessions.
Those Dragon users generally requiring more specialised training include:
  • users with a health condition or disability, including Occupational Overuse Syndrome;
  • workplace users who need speech recognition software to be as efficient and productive as possible;
  • users who need Dragon for complex computing tasks in several different applications; and
  • users who wish to adapt Dragon to work in applications it is not specifically designed for.
For face to face training, we suggest starting with an initial 2.5 hour session.  If more training is needed, we will customise a program to suit. The cost of an initial 2.5 hour face-to-face training session in the Canberra region would be $400 plus around $60 for travel (less 5% if the invoice is paid within 30 days).
For remote training we suggest starting with an initial session of 1 to 1.5 hours. You will then be in a better position to assess your further training needs.
The training process
Face-to-face training is usually delivered at your workplace or home.
The training will be tailored to your needs.
We find that a flip learning approach generally works well. In short, this involves the trainer helping the user to get started with Dragon.
The user then engages with the software and brings their questions to the next training session.
Although the trainer will ensure that all are important aspects are covered, the user determines much of the content of the sessions by bringing along their questions, after actively engaging with the software between training sessions.
Appointments & cancellation policy
Once an appointment is made, please provide as much notice as possible if a cancellation is necessary. This will allow sufficient time for another Dragon user on the waiting list to use the session time.
Cancellation fees apply if the session is cancelled with less than 24 hours’ notice and the trainer has not travelled (a 1.5 hour fee, equivalent to the minimum session time), however we would appreciate more notice if possible.
It is important to check that your Dragon software has been correctly installed and is working before proceeding with training (unless we will be installing the software for you).
In the case of a no-show or not being able to proceed with the session because equipment is not working (for example the software has not been installed correctly, or a suitable microphone has not been provided, or cannot be used because USB ports are locked), the fee for the length of the booked session and travel will be charged.
What equipment do I need?
  • A suitable computer
  • Dragon software
  • a microphone. Click here for recommended microphones.
  • the Microsoft Office suite for best results (note that Dragon does not support the cloud version of Microsoft Office 365. The desktop version is required for compatibility with Dragon)
  • For remote training you will need an internet connection
